STUDENT PROJECTS
NOVEMBER 2016

WHAT'S THE MATTER? Several of the Grade Four students conducted an experiment with M&M's. They placed M&M's in water and watched the colours dissolve. Interestingly, the colours did not mix. The Grade Four class then listed several inquiry questions as to why this occurred. Some of the questions were:
1. Would the same results happen in warm vs. cold water? 2. What would happen if more M&M's were on the plate? 3. Would the same thing happen if I used Smarties or Skittles? 4. What is stopping the colours from mixing? 5. Why do I often have to "stir" things together to get them to mix? |

KINDNESS MATTERS
"It's said that if you perform two acts of kindness a day, and the recipients go on to perform two acts of their own, more than 1,000 acts of kindness can be shared in just 10 days. But if each of those same five people performed five acts, more than 19 million acts of kindness can be shared in just 10 days!"
From How Full is Your Bucket?
The students have written down acts of kindness they have done for others and have experienced themselves. These are on the bulletin board outside of the library. Stop by and take a look:)

MAKER TIME
My neighbour gave me this fantastic box with 49 wooden puzzle pieces inside. Inside was a one-page diagram with numbered puzzle pieces. Several of the Fraser Wood students spent several recess and lunch hour times reconstructing this puzzle. Take a look below to see what animal they created!

What can a student do with popsicle sticks, modelling clay, sugar cubes, plastic straws and cardboard? Ms. Aitken's Grade Three class just completed a First Nations Unit. In teams of 3 or 4, the students learned about plank houses, pit houses, tee pees, long houses, wigwams and igloos. Have a look at some of their projects below.

October 2015
The Dot is a fantastic story by Peter H. Reynolds about a young girl Vashti who attends art class but believes she can not draw. On her blank piece of paper, all Vashti draws is a dot. The Dot is a book about inspiration and making your mark in the world.
Students will be experimenting with the 3-D colouring app "Quiver" during the month of October. To try out the Quiver app at home:
Step One: Download the Quiver app (it used to be called Colar Mix) and the free colouring sheets. The initial download of the app and several of the colouring sheets are free.
Step Two: Colour the sheet. The greater the variety of colours and contrast of colours that you use, the more vivid the 3D image will be.
Step Three: Apply the Quiver app. Select the app on your iPad and place your iPad over the colouring sheet and watch the picture come to life!
